Description of Kestner XI Doll for Sale

I am pleased to present an exquisite example of an early Kestner pouty closed mouth bisque head doll.  The head is marked XI and is 19 inches tall. This Kestner XI has the sought after pouty closed mouth. She has the look of some of the early French dolls but actually represents the pinnacle of German bisque head doll manufacturing. She was made in Germany by Kestner in the early 1880's.

The Kestner XI doll is often seen on a large ball composition body however this doll is on a bisque shoulder plate and a French gusseted kidskin body.  The body is like those on many French Poupees and very early French Bebe dolls.  During the 1880's German doll makers including Kestner produced dolls emulating the popular French dolls. The German dolls were a lower cost alternatives for the extremely high quality (and cost) French dolls. Kestner did not put their name or Germany on the XI dolls to further the notion that they were French dolls.  There is documentation that they also sold the XI head to French makers for them to use in their own dolls.  Many French makers did not have the ability to fire heads and instead bought them from French or German makers.

The Kestner XI is wearing a vintage dress shoes and socks.  She has a replacement wig with a simple fur stole and scarf made from tulle. She has no underwear. She has well made replacement bisque and leather arms.  The rest of the body is original.  There are some patches on the hips and knees.  I have inspected the patches and all are well attached and there is no leaking sawdust.  The leather in the original torso and legs is supple with no signs of splitting.

Head Mark

The head is marked as shown:  There are no marks on the body to indicate which French doll maker used this Kestner head in the production of this doll.
